Two Wolves is not a show I intended to write, it is a show that found me. As fantastical as our little pink and orange on-stage world may sometimes be, Two Wolves began in a very real place, built from conversations I found myself having over and over again with the women in my life. There is something cathartic about hearing that someone else is as "crazy" as you are, that you're not the only one who frets when someone doesn't text back or who worries that maybe you're trying too hard. Sometimes, it is only hearing another person say out loud the things you've been thinking that makes you realize how ridiculous they are -- or, at least, how little they serve you. Watching someone else walk a mile in your shoes has a way of changing your perspective on the journey.
From the writer/director
Whenever I am telling a story as profoundly human as this one, I hope that the audience will feel space for themselves in the world of the show. Literally, in the way they get to vote for character choices, and more abstractly in the many ways the wolves convey their emotions through song, dance, and conversation. Whether you're a sarcastic realist with a canny sense of what's right, or a joyful optimist with a big soft heart, I hope as many of you as possible will see a piece of yourselves in our pack. With this in mind, Dessa's music was always the first and only choice for the soundtrack to this story. If you've never listened to her before, she is the only artist I know who writes nearly all of her songs about love, but I cannot categorize any of them as clearly either a "break-up song" or a "love song". Her lyrics drive at the complex realities of adult relationships, where our judgements, preconceptions, and fantasies complicate our ability to accept and offer connection. Pairing the depth of Dessa's music with the passion brought to this show by Justine & Lark as actors has been a huge pleasure, and an absolute gift to this variety-performer-turned-brand-new-playwright trying to figure out how to translate visceral emotion into dialogue. We all knew from day one that the vision for this show was ambitious for a San Diego Fringe Festival world premiere, but who among us isn't occasionally willing to take a big risk in the name of love?

Kaylin Saur
playwright/director/choreographer
Kaylin Saur (she/her, mostly) is a multi-hyphenate theatre artist in the loosest sense of the word "theatre". More about her and how she ended up writing interactive plays can be found HERE

She is constantly grateful to the artistic community of San Diego, who have welcomed her into a new creative home and made it possible for her to actually do what she loves for a living about 70 percent of the time. The journey that has resulted in Two Wolves would have been significantly more arduous without Arson 101, which helped her discover the potential for variety performance in interactive theatre; Anna, Maddie, and Lark, who showed up for an impromptu coffee-in-the-park-turned-writers'-room; and Nicolas A. Castillo, who encourages her to go "full Muppet" as often as possible.
